Complex Systems Research on Parallel Computers

چکیده
Complex Systems research is a multidisciplinary eld covering the gamut from Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology to Economics. Whilst there is no good agreement on what the term \Complex-ity" might mean, there are a number of threads or concepts linking the diierent disciplines together into a coherent eld of research. Traditional mathematical techniques such as Analysis, Linear Algebra and Diieren-tial Equations have been largely ineeective at tackling the problems in Complex Systems; it is only in the last twenty years or so that computer modeling has been able to shed light in this eld of research. The eld is maturing, and the complex systems models are getting more sophisticated. It is now becoming apparent that high performance computing and in particular parallel computing will need to be exploited in the next generation of models. Unfortunately, the structure of typical complex systems models have acted as an impediment to eective expoita-tion of their inherent parallelism. This paper discusses some of the issues, and suggests a way forward. The idea of what is a complex system is not well deened, however people intuitively feel that a biological organism is complex, whereas a cup of water is not. There are a number of themes which run through studies of complex systems , one of the more important being that of emergence. Whilst the notion of emergence is as notoriously diicult to pin down rigourously as the concept 1

Parallel computers and complex systems
We present an overview of the state of the art and future trends in high performance parallel and distributed computing, and discuss techniques for using such computers in the simulation of complex problems in computational science. The use of high performance parallel computers can help improve our understanding of complex systems, and the converse is also true — we can apply techniques used f...
متن کاملParallel algorithms for solving Stochastic Linear Programs
Parallel and distributed computing platforms are beginning to revolutionise the traditional engineering design process. Rather than performing direct experiments, researchers are now able to simulated extremely complex systems based on numerical models. When appropriately formulated, these models allow the designer to predict the behaviour of real systems with great accuracy. However, the cost ...
متن کاملParallel Spatial Pyramid Match Kernel Algorithm for Object Recognition using a Cluster of Computers
This paper parallelizes the spatial pyramid match kernel (SPK) implementation. SPK is one of the most usable kernel methods, along with support vector machine classifier, with high accuracy in object recognition. MATLAB parallel computing toolbox has been used to parallelize SPK. In this implementation, MATLAB Message Passing Interface (MPI) functions and features included in the toolbox help u...
متن کاملA Parallel Control Algorithm for Hybrid Image Recognition
The increase of processing speed is an important goal in the development of image recognition systems, especially in case of the recognition of complex objects. The use of parallel computers offers possibilities for the acceleration of the necessary algorithms. However, only few research work has been done in the area of high level image recognition. In our contribution parallel knowledge based...
متن کاملHardware Parallelism: Are Operating Systems Ready? (Case Studies in Mis-Scheduling)
Commodity parallel computers are no longer a technology predicted for some indistinct future: they are becoming ubiquitous. In the absence of significant advances in clock speed, chip-multiprocessors (CMPs) and symmetric multithreading (SMT) are the modern workhorses that keep Moore’s Law still relevant. On the software side, we are starting to observe the adaptation of some codes to the new co...
